NINETEEN

LUNA

I step out of my room and into the hallway, glancing around nervously. Holding my breath, my heart pounds hard against my chest. I hear Bran leave, but I freeze when I see Delaney on the sofa waiting for me. Goosebumps blanket my bare arms and legs as she wordlessly pats the space next to her. The lump in my throat grows denser when I sit beside her, grabbing a small pillow to hug tightly.

“What did you hear last night?” Delaney asks, and I tense. Damnit, she doesn’t beat around the bush, does she? My mouth dries, and I lick my lips anxiously. She sits back, rubbing the side of her face with her knuckles thoughtfully. “Did you hear Keenan and Bran fighting?”

“Um, no . . . well, yes, but I couldn’t make any of it out. I came out after he left and heard you two,” I answer truthfully, my tongue ill-fitting in my mouth. Glancing over at her, I look away quickly under the intensity of her steady gaze. “What happened . . . in Seattle?”

“Keenan, Bran, and I went there when Keenan discovered that Keeva was being a sugar baby to supplement her income after Keenan cut her off,” Delaney starts, inhaling deeply and holding her breath. Her eyes fog with memories. “Keenan lied, said she turned to whoring and was putting herself in dangerous situations. Bran had no reason not to buy the story. He used to idolize Keenan, and he was still so angry at Keeva and Eamon for going to America in the first place. He felt like the family was breaking up.”

“I take it . . . that wasn’t the case at all?” I ask and fight a wince. Of course, it’s not! Bran is so consumed with guilt and regret—how can it be? Delaney nods firmly.

“It wasn’t, no. It was almost three months ago? A little more than three months ago. While they were having their little intervention, I was at a pub. Keenan told me to go alone because no one would know who I was . . . a Gallagher. We just found out a few years ago that we’re cousins of the Mackenzie family. The head of the Irish Mafia,” Delaney pauses to eyeball me critically, searchingly. I hold my breath as she pulls up her knees to prop under her chin. “It had nothing to do with that, in the end, but it also had everything to do with it. I was cornered in the bathroom by three men.”

“Y-you don’t have to describe it, Delaney,” I whisper shakily, and her lips quirk in a pathetic smile. My heart aches for her as the color drains from her cheeks. She’d never looked so gaunt, so soulless.

“I didn’t want anyone to know, and I didn’t tell Bran until we were on the plane back home,” Delaney pauses to suck in a shallow breath, puffing out her lips. I can’t tell whether she wants to laugh or cry. “He blames himself with hindsight.
